Japanese Garlic Beer

Here’s some interesting news: a Japanese company has combined its popular dark beer with the pungent, intense flavor of black garlic, thus creating the unique and rather bizarre Aomori Garlic Black Beer.

Featuring a sleek black label with elegant golden writing, the black garlic-flavored beer bottle – which costs 630 yen ($6.5) – looks very appealing to any avid dark beer lover. The first sip of Aomori Garlic Black Beer doesn’t taste very different from any other quality black beer, but as the dark goes down your throat and into the stomach, the potent black garlic flavor starts to take over your mouth. Incredibly, those brave enough to actually try the Aomori Garlic Black Beer say the spicy, potent aftertaste is very addictive, making you want to drink more and more of the strange beverage.

Japan's First Plus Size Fashion Show

Japan’s first fashion magazine for larger ladies, La Farfa has held its first fashion show to celebrate the launch of the debut issue on March 21st.

Comedienne Naomi Watanabe, who graces the cover of the magazine, led fourteen dokusha moderu (reader models) in a showcase of the smiLeLand 2013 Spring & Summer Collection. smiLeLand is an apparel retailer that specializes in larger sizes.

Of course, Japan is a land where the girls are known for being decidedly on the slim (if not skinny) side, so the editors and producers of La Farfa, while obviously hoping to change attitudes and broaden the market, are still being realistic about demand for the magazine.

La Farfa will be initially released just twice a year (spring-summer and autumn-winter), though with the first issue print run clocking in at a healthy 50,000 copies.

Ramen Flavoured Ice Cream

Got a little riddle for you: How do you make the most convenient convenience store food even easier? Eliminate the need to chew. Perfect for babies, old people and the terminally underpaid, miso ramen-flavored ice cream is apparently very real and, yes, even in Japan, very, very odd. Spotted at Namja Town, an indoor theme park in Tokyo, this instant wax and MSG-inspired concoction “kinda tastes like some weird peanut butter,” and while not necessarily bad, isn’t necessarily good either.

Creative Advertising Perfume Plug-in Ad in Japan

While Japan’s robotically hypnotic girl-trio Perfume is making their world debut while keeping their “Japan-ness” with their new album JPN, they’re also still being heavily promoted at home.

Not sure if this has been done before, but this ad in Shibuya for the single Spring of Life plays the video, but if you want to hear the music you’ll have to plug in your own headphones. Pretty decent amount of people doing it too, all plugged into the same wall.

Here's what the ad looks like.

Interesting 15 Minutes of Love Concept by Toshiba

Toshiba have attempted to make battery charging sexy and attractive in their latest campaign “15 Minutes Of Love“, which lets any man experience what it is like to have not one but five attractive girls vying for your attention. A microsite set up for the campaign lets users exchange emails with girls of their dreams in the same time it takes to charge one of Toshiba’s new batteries.

The more you reply the more the mails encourage you, but if you can’t keep up with all five girls the mood gets increasingly impatient represented in the girls picture as they become more annoyed.

The end result of how many girls you have kept happy or more to the point who has given you the push is displayed at the end and can be tweeted out or posted to Facebook as well.

Flying Sphere-Shaped Drones by the Ministry of Defence in Japan

The video below shows the drone doing everything it was designed to do: zipping around omnidirectionally, rolling across the floor, and staying aloft even when it strikes--or is struck by--an obstacle.

Perhaps most impressive: the thing is built with off-the-shelf parts and costs a ridiculously lean $1,400. For that you get airborne speeds topping out at nearly 40 miles per hour and stability backed up by three on-board gyros that keep the thing aloft even when it runs into objects. Not bad bang for your buck.

The Japanese Defense Ministry envisions the drone going into service as a search and rescue tool and an intelligence and reconnaissance drone.
